Cardno had a training problem that most professional services firms will recognise. Generic off-the-shelf content wasn’t cutting it. The organisation had deep, company-specific knowledge — proven approaches to project management, business development and leadership — but no fast, scalable way to capture and share it.

Before Tribal Habits, Cardno used a leading authoring tool that exported to SCORM files. It worked, but it was slow. Creating training required graphic design skills, instructional design skills and specialist software knowledge — capabilities that few people in the organisation had. Every new module created a bottleneck. Third-party providers helped, but the cost and timeframes couldn’t support the volume of training Cardno needed.
What the team needed was something faster, simpler and scalable — a platform anyone could use to build training, without needing to be a designer or developer.
“We knew we wanted to do things the Cardno way — and traditional e-learning tools were too limited and too slow to get us there in the timeframes we were working to.”
After a successful trial, Cardno committed to three distinct areas of work within Tribal Habits.
The first was project management. Cardno invests in PMBOK training to ensure staff are applying best practices — but PMBOK is generic by design. The team used Tribal Habits to build a suite of complementary modules that translated the methodology into how it actually plays out across Cardno’s day-to-day projects.
“PMBOK’s methodology is fantastic, but we needed a way to teach how it would apply to Cardno — to the challenges and nuances we face every day. Tribal Habits fit the bill perfectly.”
The second was business development. Cardno knew it had exceptional BD knowledge sitting inside the heads of a small number of senior people. Twenty subject matter experts shared their approaches via webinar, captured on video. When feedback suggested that long videos weren’t the most engaging format, Tribal Habits was used to transform that raw content into fully interactive modules — with context, assessments, and completion tracking built in.
“It would have taken up to a year using a traditional authoring tool. With Tribal Habits we were delivering training in three months — at around 25% of what it would have cost otherwise.”
The third was leadership. Cardno developed a Global Leadership Framework built around four pillars, eight enablers and a set of desired behaviours. Generic leadership training wasn’t going to cut it — so the team built modules against each enabler, speaking directly to Cardno’s culture and the specific challenges its managers face.
“If we identify a development opportunity in someone’s leadership, we can immediately direct them to a module we’ve created. It helps improve their understanding and performance in that specific area.”
Across more than 40 training topics and 2,310 active users, the project management training alone has recorded over 15,000 completions. The platform sees an average of 96 logins per month — a sign that content is engaging and evergreen rather than a one-time requirement.
92% of participants have rated their training experience as going well or great. 75% of all assigned training has been completed — well above industry benchmarks.
“Tribal Habits has allowed us to rapidly create customised training specific to our needs — vastly cheaper than the alternatives, and faster and more flexible than our previous approaches.”
The results impressed Cardno’s executive team enough to prompt discussions about localising content for regional rollout. Induction and graduate training through Tribal Habits were also committed to as the next phase of work.
When generic content won’t reflect how your organisation actually works, Tribal Habits gives your team the tools to build training that’s specific, fast to create, and easy to keep current.
