Customer Story: inCommunity

inCommunity is a not-for-profit housing and homelessness service based in Ipswich, Queensland, supporting young people, adults and families since 1982. With a small, agile workforce delivering across multiple programs, they needed a training system that could flex with the organisation — built internally, without specialist expertise, and grounded in the real work their people do every day.

serving the Ipswich community — purpose-driven from the very beginning

inCommunity has been working to address homelessness in the Ipswich community since 1982. Today, the organisation delivers housing crisis support, assertive outreach, mobile support, food relief and community connection programs — guided by a simple but powerful purpose: to inspire people so that they believe they can.

With around 30 staff working across those programs, training had historically relied on peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and on-the-job learning. It worked up to a point. But as staff moved between roles and programs, the gaps that came with informal training were becoming harder to ignore — and harder to demonstrate compliance against during audits.

inCommunity scaleable training

Training that reflects real work, not generic assumptions

What inCommunity needed wasn’t an off-the-shelf solution. Their work is specific, their programs are distinct, and the people they support deserve a workforce trained to the realities of community services — not a generic workplace safety module.

Using Tribal Habits, the team began building their own training from scratch. Induction pathways, compliance modules and program-specific learning — all created internally, using tools that didn’t require specialist technical knowledge to operate.

One of the clearest examples is the training built for staff working on the organisation’s assertive outreach coffee van. Previously, this was delivered entirely on the job. By moving it into a digital format — with videos, accordion elements and interactive activities — new team members can now begin learning before their first shift. They arrive prepared, confident and less reliant on colleagues to fill the gaps.

“We’ve gone from using off-the-shelf training offerings to creating a purpose-built, engaging module that is bespoke to inCommunity. We’re able to build training that inspires learning.”

Flexible by design

In a community services setting, no two workdays look the same. Staff schedules vary significantly between programs and roles, and pulling people away from client-facing work for training isn’t always possible.

The ability to complete training during quieter moments — between appointments, on a phone, whenever it fits — has been significant for the team. Learning continues without interrupting service delivery, and no one falls behind because a scheduled session didn’t suit their roster.

“Being able to jump into training at a time suitable to the individual team member’s schedule — that kind of flexibility is incredibly valuable for our team.”

Course development has become faster too. Sage AI has helped streamline content creation and revision, reducing the time spent formatting modules or writing summaries. By cloning existing content rather than overwriting it, the team preserves training history and maintains consistency for future learners — without starting from scratch each time something changes.

A single source of truth for compliance

With all training consolidated into one platform, inCommunity now has clear visibility across every staff member’s learning journey. Training can be assigned, completions tracked and renewals managed — all without a dedicated L&D team to run it.

That centralised structure has given the organisation greater confidence heading into audits, and opens the door to more structured compliance reporting as state government funding requirements evolve.

“It’s not just about compliance — it’s about reflecting who we are as an organisation and what we believe in.”

Looking ahead, inCommunity is building more comprehensive onboarding pathways, strengthening compliance processes and developing targeted training aligned to specific program areas. The goal is a workforce that’s skilled, adaptable and deeply connected to the mission — supported by training that’s built to match.

“We want to support staff with onboarding, compliance and program-specific training. Tribal Habits helps us do that in a way that reflects who we are.”
