Customer Story: Art of Work

Art of Work is a leadership training provider built for a new era of thinking. When one of Australia’s largest retailers needed to transform the way its leaders approached safe work practices — across hundreds of locations, with no appetite for long classroom days — Art of Work needed a smarter delivery model. The answer was blended learning, powered by Tribal Habits.

When one of Australia’s leading retailers came to Art of Work, the brief was clear: transform the way leaders thought about and practised safe work — but do it in a way that respected their time, reflected modern learning expectations, and could reach people across hundreds of locations nationwide.

Long days in the classroom with printed workbooks weren’t going to cut it. Neither was a purely online approach. The answer was a genuinely blended model — and the technology to make it work.

Rethinking what blended learning means

Most blended learning programs treat online and in-person as two separate things. Art of Work had a different view. The goal was to make them genuinely connected with online pre-work preparation participants so that face-to-face sessions could go deeper, faster, without retreading ground that could be covered before the room came together.

Using Tribal Habits as the technology backbone, Art of Work built a pre-work program that ensured every participant arrived at each session already grounded in the key concepts. Time in the room was spent on the things that actually require a room — conversation, challenge, and real-world application.

“Doing the pre-work online meant that when we got into the room, we could skip the basics and get straight into the hard conversations. The sessions felt completely different — more focused, more useful.”

Bringing the technology into the classroom

Art of Work went a step further than most blended programs by bringing Tribal Habits into the face-to-face sessions themselves. Rather than printed workbooks that end up in a filing cabinet, participants used the platform’s digital notebook throughout each session — capturing notes, reflections and activities in the same place as their pre-work.

This created something unusual: a single, continuous learning record that followed each participant from before the session to during it and beyond. Insights that might have stayed private surfaced through the digital format. Participants could return to their notes and reference material long after the sessions had finished.

“Having everything in one place — the pre-work, the session notes, the follow-up activities — meant the learning didn’t stop when people left the room. It stayed accessible and relevant.”

Built in two weeks, designed to last three years

Despite the complexity of the brief, Art of Work built the entire program — both online and in-person components — in under two weeks. The platform’s flexibility allowed the team to respond in real time during sessions, spinning up additional online content on the spot when specific issues emerged in the room.

The training was designed to capture Kirkpatrick behavioural changes, with on-the-job activities tracked through the platform, providing tangible evidence of shifts in how leaders were working. Feedback from managers across the client organisation was emphatic — staff who had completed the pre-work online found face-to-face sessions significantly more engaging and valuable than previous leadership training.

The pilot was deemed a categorical success. The program is now being rolled out to 4,000+ leaders over a three-year period.
